Mallala 2012

Post  Pauly on 28/11/2011, 12:03 am

So Mallala has been proposed as the opening round of 2012. It appears there has been some discussion with the SA guys. What are people's thoughts on the idea? What might the SA boys have in store for us?

Pro's - another track and most likely 5-6 SA cars added to the grid, Barossa Valley...
Con's - the drive, potential heat and being the opening round potential victorian numbers

From my point of view it is another track and the added bonus of a few SA guys it could be good but the only hurdle for me may be cost to and from and time off work..

I voted maybe for me I want to do a full championship again next year so if it was on the calendar I guess I would have to go but I personally think it's too early in the year for my liking.

Agree. Heat and a very early trek may knock it on the head when it could be more successful if held later in the year

I won't be going as I am in Darwin for the 70th Anniversary celebrations with my Dad (its the 2nd last item on his bucket list)

I think it's also worth noting it's not too long before the Island classic where a lot of our historic guys normally compete at and I doubt they will head over to SA a couple of weeks before such a big meeting.

Remember if it's like this year it is drop your worst round anyway...so you can miss a round

Unless like last year where you had to do Mallala before you could drop a round (excluding your results from Mallala). Otherwise all your results counted.

Mallala 2012

Post  Gearbox on 29/11/2011, 10:11 am

I have to say that the February round at Mallala is not the best one to attend, it is a one day race meet including a night race (which some people may like) but Mallala in February can be ridiculously hot (43 degrees plus northerly wind) It would be great to have the Vics back but maybe a mid year meeting would be a better option ( barossa is nicer then as well, and not as busy at the popular wineries).

No one will be chasing a championship on the first round, expensive trip for a one day event and maybe to hot.

Despite the possibility of a hot meeting and the fact it is a one dayer, the twilight meeting is a lot of fun, and there are probably those who have never raced in the dark. There has been a lot of discussion on small MG grids in SA, what are the chances of combining with the locals to get a few more races in to make the trek more worthwhile? I think there was some discussion on this the last time we went over, but it was knocked on the head. Just a thought.

I would strongly suggest anyone who is seriously considering making the trek to Mallala do so. Racing at night is awesome and is a new challenge in its self. My guess is that the MGF trophy will be combined with the other MG's, so it should be interesting to see how we compare against other various MG's. If you’re worried about the heat, toughen up it’s not that bad. Laughing

We had a scorcher at Calder a few years back which was just insane. Trouble is its basically a $2000 excercise for what is basically a 1 day meet which also kinda screws up the working week.

That's what is probably the most enticing aspect for me, it is something completely different Very Happy

Eh? Yeah you might lose a Friday travelling, but that's no different to Winton for some people. You have Sunday to drive back...so Monday can be normalish? So you miss 1 day of work?

I really like the Tassie idea would be a great meeting and you don't get many chances to run at Bakerville.
