Which format would you prefer
Sandown Format - Round 3 - June 16/17
So I am asking this on behalf of David Vernall and the Sandown organising group.
For this upcoming Sandown there is an option to run longer feature races on both days, what they are looking for is feedback, good or bad, for or against, a different format. This is only for this upcoming Sandown in June!
Last year this round featured the following format, which would likely be replicated this year.
1x 15 minute Qualifying session
1x 8 Lap race Saturday
1x 5 lap race Sunday
1x 6 lap race Sunday
1x 10 lap race Sunday
The alternative option is for
1x 15 minute Qualifying session
1x 17 Lap race Saturday afternoon
1x 17 Lap race Sunday
The thoughts for this are
-More race laps with the benefit of less time spent on warm up laps/start procedure/cleaning up after 4x sessions, and instead only requiring 2x warm up laps, 2x clean up etc.
-More race laps per dollar
-Sandown is much less abusive on tyres meaning those on 'soft' slicks (eg Jason) won't destroy their tyres as much as at Phillip Island
-With 3x Sandown rounds a slightly different format to mix the calendar up
-Heat unlikely to be a factor in June
David Vernall has spoken to David Mottram regarding the points as normally points are paid per race, this would mean for someone who does relatively well at every event this could be the round they would have to drop, DM has agreed that double points could be allocated to reflect the longer format/effort required so the same amount of points as if we ran 4x short races would be available.
So it comes down to what we all would like from a driving perspective, longer races or the same as the other Sandown events?
This could be a good trial to see what we all think as we could possibly ask for this in the future at other rounds to mix our season formats up
Please post all feedback below

I'm all in favor for the longer races. A new format and will be interesting to see who can physically go the distance without dropping any pace. It's also something new and everyone has always said lets have longer races so come on everyone get behind this great idea!

Personally I like the idea, it will mean a shorter time waiting around the track and will mean you can get some consistency on track (well if its dry at least), what other time can you get more than 10 laps on track in a row!!! and brings it back from a HP/who has the best tyre race. I am up for the change, we have two more Sandowns for the short races after all.

You're always wanting more or less laps depending on your position so either way a change is good.
We also won't know until we try. We'll get more laps in the process and a smoother race program.

I would be up for longer races as a change but my hired car would struggle to do 17 laps due to the size of its fuel tank.
If it was 15 laps I would risk it.
Unless we did pitstops !

Tell Justine you need to buy another ZR as you need one with a bigger fuel tank
Don't throw pit stops in, next we will have a driver change!

Come on someone, whats happening ???? typical last minute decision.
Just incase I have bought a tank plus fittings at $500, now labour, day off work and a fire wall fabrication.
So this is going to cost me $1500 for one race !!!! I hope its worth it.
It better not get change back to the scratch races or I might do something I regret.

Jason, given that as far as I know a decision has not as yet been made, it is brave of you to have purchased a special fuel tank for the race. I have a fuel cell here (brand new) that you can borrow if it helps. A few fitting do not cost a lot. Give me a call tomorrow (Friday1st June) if you want to borrow it.

Thanks for your kind offer David, but I have started modding the new tank in preperation.
We have only 2 weeks left and the feedback was positive for the long race. And I have been told its 99.9% going to happen.
I am in full time work so only have weekend to get cars ready for these events, so time is a issue.
Its ironic we know what the format is on the 11th & 12th August at Winton but we don't know whats happening in 2 weeks at our own event.

Sandown Format Round 3
Yeah Jay, although a 17 lap race would be interesting.... it would be nice if the committee would ask those who are competing at Sandown what format we would like before making a decision.

Your lucky you have had notice. When was the last time we were told about the format we normally get told when the further regs come out the week of the event.
So your lucky you have been told about Winton and Sandown.

Umm how were we not asked? It was on this forum, the Facebook site (if your on Facebook) and an email went around asking everyone to vote and ask what they thought.

Welcome Richard....
I think this thread has run it's course, all future discussion should be done at the event thread given this was only about thoughts on the format. Thread locked.
